Our Chinese New Year project

So its that time of the year again.  Last year we didn't do anything for Chinese New Year, instead focussing on Valentines day instead. This year we thought we might try doing both..;)


SO we have had this board up for a while and I've been desperate to get started. Sadly we have had quite a bit to contend with (2 interview days, 2 days of school closure because of a fire and newbies!)  Yesterday one of the team finally managed to get started on making some dragon's out of junk materials.  

Today I decided I wanted to go full-hog and I enriched all of our creative area with New Year activities centred round black, gold and red.  We also told tradition story to start to immerse the children in the festival. 





The noodles proved very popular even though most of the children couldn't use the chopsticks!

We were also lucky to have been sent a collection of items from Springboard supplies (CLICK).  The pack included quite a nifty package:

Pre-cut lanterns set, Concertina dragons, tactile dragons, assorted glitter, pompoms, assorted mixed glittery paper, gold and silver ribbons, calendar stick ons and swirling dragons. 
Today we used the lantern cuts out (click to view), the assorted glittery/shiny paper and the dragons.  As we have a LOT of children we could only work in small groups.  I have to admit it was quite adult led because a lot of the resources are geared towards slightly older children (reception children could easily use these).  However a lot of our children were very interested none-the-less and tried their best, we just needed to help to assemble them and hang them. 


Later in the day we decided to try the concertina dragon set (click to view).  Their little fingers couldn't quite fold the paper centres but the children were able to help stick on the dragon head and tail which they decorated themselves as well as the lollipop sticks which came along in the pack.  They asked for adult help with the assembly but, again, reception children would have been able to use them independently with a little modelling. 




We are slowly building up our project around Chinese New Year building on these first adult led activities.  Our plan is to follow the children's interests and see where they take us.  See our project on dinosaurs by clicking here.

We also received some tactile dragons (click).  We're going to use these with our SEN children as they came with some wonderful fabric which will blend well with the added sensory resources that we have been using lately.
